POETRY

Walking as Resistance

My chubby wooden legs
anchored to the grass

confident half grin
as I tetter-totter to grandma

who’s saying come on

and mom yells out
she’ll fall

and grandma retorts
she’s got to learn!

But Mom clutches me
from behind

whispers I got you!

Did she notice
my flailing arms?

Two more limbs
struggling

against
confinement

even as I smiled?
