Hungry Ghosts

hungry ghosts gather
roam the streets
fiery burning bins
houses they once inhabited
smoldering pungent joss sticks
sacrificial paper cars
torched replica currency

devouring meandering souls
trail the passageways
a promised peaceful afterlife

it’s not the departed who are adrift
it’s the lost living souls

patiently, I erect an altar
