ESCAPE FROM THE BLUE GARDEN
like small flowers
all over a slope
they spread in surfs
of forget-me-nots
bruises
the blue garden
once served as fertile ground
now it conceals cries
wanting to be unburied
from its depths
weeds scrape through
reedy holes of rusty fences
for an escape from
a chain-linked prison
they feed on sunlight
greedy dragonflies
whisk away
Jennifer Tan has won the Short Works Prize for her poems in 2016 and in 2020. She will have her poems published in three new anthologies on various themes scheduled for 2021 and 2022. She is a committee member of Litlive, the reading series in Hamilton, Ontario, and a member of Tower Poetry Society. She finds that like gardening, painting, and running, writing is another good habit that she has acquired. She also enjoys drinking coffee and reading books written in Spanish.
