Poets Starting after Forty

The young poets may pity
others for starting after forty,

joining the long queue late
with old tone and thoughts
as they ripened during aging
in the interior belly of barrels
The maturing masked & moderated

What they lost in youth
and now making up in midlife
reprinting a faded facsimile
that was forced into bondage
failing to fulfill in prime

Very different from theirs
what a predicament they face now
after all those strife & stages
of a festering mess of pain & plateau

not one expression erased
though they start behind, as if eventually
dormant with emotions

a volcano were to erupt from under
the barrier between then & now
