Our HEAD ABOVE WATER columnist Tim Clark has chosen his top five songs on the theme of THE OTHER SIDE OF SUMMER.

This month was a little tougher. Though, there is some good music out there about getting older. In some cases, about not getting older. I think aging has done me some good, I still think I’m a lot smarter than most of the people around me, but I’m wise enough to know how stupid that sounds. In a lot of ways as long as I keep moving getting older is just another step on my path to… whatever it is I keep trying to reach.

Remember, September is coming, which means Swappers Day, in Johnstown, official slogan; “If you can’t find it at Swapper’s you don’t need it.” So if you need something let me know and I will keep my eyes open.

Suicide is Painless by Johnny Mandel

Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce

Two Cents Worth by Kansas

When I was Young by Eric Burdon and the Animals

Tim Clark lives in Columbus, OH. He is an employee, a husband, a  father and a blogger. You can see his blog here, Life Explained. He writes occasionally and with pride for Street Speech, a local homeless advocacy newspaper. He is contributor for The Ugly Writers and the Good Men Project. He is particularly vain about his monthly column on The Wild Word. He is working on a novel.

I vote for Forever Young. That song tugs on my heart strings the most.

Time in a Bottle – because the 10 year-old me who first heard this in ’73 has just about the same music tastes, 50 years later.

When I Was Young by the Animals. I saw them in concert in 1964 with Herman’s Hermits.

Cousin Mike here. I’m going with Forever Young. But, I have a write-in candidate! Cats in the Cradle by Jim Croce. It’s a song that stuck with me over the years. Have tried to always make time for my kids so I don’t wind up in the position of the Dad in this song at the end.

Cats in the cradle was by Harry Chapin, I think, but Forever Young is a great choice.

I stand corrected! Harry Chapin it is. Thanks Tim
