POETRY

Like Clockwork
A clock ticks in the quiet
before language
a face
in the dark
hall behind me, the only
dark of winter
morning
the only ticking
clock and the winter before
languish
the stillness before snow.
Clouds clock the minutes since
I emerged from the dark
throat of the hall.
