The Perpetrator

The chilling screech of the crow
breaks the afternoon lethargy.

Some men swarm
up the hill,
climbing from the river
to the ranch
with buckets and pitchers
they’ve filled with water.
The heat intensifies,
burning their skin.
The neighbors hear
an orchestra, off key,
cackling, whinnying,
oxen lowing,
boards that creak
then collapse.
The yellow tempest
from the pasture in flames,
rains upward to the skies,
devouring the mosquitoes,
the webs woven by spiders,
and the air’s humidity;
in the garden, the dog
howls unconsolable,
his food bowl in flames.

On the other side of the river,
the man who threw the matches,
drunk on rum and laughter,
contemplates in his hammock
the splendor of the fire.

El autor del delito 

El chillido agorero del cuervo
irrumpe en la modorra de la tarde.

Unos hombres pululan
entre el monte
y suben desde el río
hasta la hacienda
con los valdes y cántaros
que llenaron de agua.
El calor se acrecienta
y les arde en la piel.
Los vecinos escuchan
una orquesta desafinada
de cacareos, relinchos,
de mugidos de bueyes,
de crujir de tablones
que se desploman.
Desde el pastizal encendido
la tempestad amarilla
llueve hacia los cielos,
devorando los mosquitos,
las redes que tejieron las arañas,
y la humedad del aire;
en el jardín el perro
aúlla desconsolado
por su cazuela en llamas.

Al otro lado del río,
el que arrojó los fósforos,
ebrio de ron y carcajadas
en su hamaca contempla
el esplendor del fuego.
