MONGOOSE ON REPEAL THE 8th
The Repeal campaign is something we feel strongly about, and we’re proud to be able to represent our convictions through our art. The 8th amendment is a violation of basic human rights, and the importance of repealing it cannot be understated. Through our music and its ability to connect with an audience, we felt we could add to the momentum and strength of the campaign.
We felt that our single ‘Doing Things Wrong’ naturally lent itself to the #repealthe8th campaign, as its tone reflected the feelings surrounding the 8th amendment—despair, anger, frustration. We decided to base the video for the single around that theme, as a symbolic representation of the reality of women living under the effect of the 8th amendment.
Furthermore, we ran a week long series of live streamed “pop-up performances” of the single, which we tagged #singforrepeal. We chose locations connected to people that have brought about positive change for women in Ireland, covering four broad categories—workers’ rights, education rights, reproductive rights, and voting rights. It culminated with a performance outside the Dáil (government buildings in Dublin).
We hope to keep the momentum of this campaign going by inviting other artists, musicians and performers to stream their own #singforrepeal performance. It may only be a small thing, but it’s the best way we know how to keep adding to the conversation and supporting the Repeal the 8th campaign.
