ILLUMINATING ILLUSTRATIONS
Images for Emer Martin’s ‘#secondrising’
Note from the Editor
These illustrations were developed over the last month to accompany Emer Martin’s story, #secondrising.
Each illustration has something in relation to this month’s theme of REVOLUTION.
The banner image is inspired by Robert Ballagh’s famous 1916 image.
The Googletakeover image has a real photo from the 1916 Rising.
The burning church image takes a scene from the story in which families of women from the Magdelene laundries burn down the Archbishop’s palace in Dublin and develops on it. This image has as a background a page from the damning Ferns Report that catalogued the Irish Catholic Church’s complicity and coverup of years of clerical sex abuse.
The last image of the series, the beheading, features two famous revolutionary quotes from Irish trade unionist and socialist James Larkin and Irish Republican and socialist James Connolly:
“Ní uasal aon uasal ach sinne bheith íseal: Éirímis.
The great appear great because we are on our knees: Let us rise.”
“The worker is the slave of capitalist society, the female worker is the slave of that slave.”
