POETRY
Last Look
Eyes open
gated
an attenuated
gray rust,
face, mine,
striated.
Time rustling
its paper bag.
Being Born
The nurse wraps the old womb
in a new diaper.
One tangled eye opens.
A squeezed river.
If she is a table,
is this a ceremony?
Maybe she’s being born.
Maybe the clipped-on bag overhead
will fill with milk.
Robert Hirschfield is a New York-based poet who also writes feature pieces on poets. His work has appeared in Salamander, The Moth, Noon, The Iconoclast, Ink Sweat and Tears, Parabola and other publications. He draws inspiration from the Haiku and Tanka poets of Japan, who taught him that the poetic line draws its energy from the space around it and the silence within it.
